Sugar Creek FarmHeritage breed chickens and turkeys

Chickens

chickensOur flock of chickens typically includes several varieties of heritage breed birds. All are brown egg layers. They enjoy an enclosure with a poultry fence that keeps predators out but allows them plenty of room to roam, find bugs and other goodies, and take their much loved dirt baths! We are able to move them every two weeks, which gives them fresh vegetation to eat and new areas to explore.

Turkeys

turkeysOur turkeys are a heritage breed called Bourbon Red. They arrive at our house in early May and leave in time for Thanksgiving. They are humanely processed by a USDA-certified, small-scale processor in Siler City, NC. While the turkeys are with us, they are enclosed by a poultry fence that allows them plenty of room to roam but keeps them safe from the many predators (raccoons, foxes, hawks, coyotes, etc.) that lurk around our farm. They have free choice of shelter or none and are provided with a place to roost at night. They are moved often so that they can have fresh grass and other vegetation to eat, and they love to find bugs and worms to supplement their diet!

NOTE: We do not feed our birds organic feed because it is cost prohibitive, so we don't call them organic. However, they are never treated with any preventative antibiotics or hormones, and the vegetation they eat has never been sprayed with any pesticides or synthetic fertilizers.
