Sugar Creek FarmAbout Sugar Creek Farm

Jeff and BetsyWe are North Carolina natives who have always loved being outside and who appreciate unadulterated nature, which led us to look into the health and environmental benefits of sustainable agriculture. Jeff educated himself through Central Carolina Community College’s Sustainable Agriculture Program and we developed a small garden to grow organic vegetables for ourselves. Each of us have kept our day jobs, but growing organic produce began to take up more and more of our time. In 2004, we made it official and started Sugar Creek Farm on 45 acres in Davie County, North Carolina. In 2005 we started selling at the Dixie Classic Fairgrounds Farmers’ Market, which we still attend, and later added the Cobblestone Market (both in Winston-Salem).

Growing Needs

There is a growing need in our area for local and organic food, so we now grow a large variety of vegetables to try to meet the demand! In 2008, we added some egg-laying chickens to the mix, and in 2009 we decided to raise heritage breed turkeys for Thanksgiving. We have been thrilled with the response of our customers, old and new, to the produce and poultry we provide and we are always thankful for their support.

veggies at the marketWe continue to try new vegetable varieties, and our growing season is now April through November. Before you know it, we’ll be growing all year round! For pictures of our farm and the latest news, please visit our blog at www.sugarcreekfarm.blogspot.com.

Natalie Sevin, Farm Manager

NatalieIn 2011, we gave in and admitted we needed help! We were very lucky to find Natalie Sevin and convince her to become our farm manager.

Natalie majored in anthropology at Wake Forest University and later joined the Peace Corps in Mali, West Africa where she became interested in sustainable agriculture. When she returned, she decided to pursue a career in small-scale farming and worked at The Rodale Institute in Pennsylvania, Cherry Valley CSA and Serenbe Farms. Now, she says she “is excited to be working in well-built soils with folks who have been in the business for a while."
